Invitation to participate in a Tree Planting Exercise organised by Yatta Environment Network to Commemorate World Environment Day 2016

The Yatta and Environment Network is an alliance of Schools, Youth groups, individuals and farmers who engage in environmental conservation programmes in Yatta, Masinga and Mwala sub counties of Machakos County.

YEN invites to attend a tree planting exercise on the 5th of June 2016at Makivenzi Primary School in Matuu to commemorate World Environment Day.

The YEN GREEN SCHOOLS PROGRAM is a Climate Action awareness initiative by the YATTA ENVIRONMENT NETWORK (YEN) mitigating against deforestation and climate change involving students, teachers and the community in developing ¼ acre tree groves in 200 schools in Yatta, Masinga and Mwala sub-counties of Machakos County.

The Ministry of Environment, Ministry of Education, Kenya Forest Service and Kenya Forestry Research Institute have sanctioned this initiative as a very timely and sustainable program.They will offer technical and material support  to the initiative.  The program was officially launched on 14 November 2015 by the Minister for Environment Prof.Judy Wakhungu.

THE YEN GREEN SCHOOLS INITIATIVE will enable pupils & students benefit from knowledge on best practices of nurturing, managing and growing value trees. The students and pupils will adopt the trees.

The program incorporates
-mentorship
and training for teachers & patrons in all Schools
learning materials  are provided to boost their capacity for future engagement at no cost. -Farmers are mobilised and sensitized on  adoption and management of Melia volkensii (MUKAU) as a farm tree.
Wildlife and Environment clubs will be established in all schools in Machakos County.
