Taita Taveta County Youth Empowerment Summit 2016

On the 4th of June 2016, The County Government through the Department of Trade and Community Affairs and other development partners organized the Youth Empowerment Summit 2016 aimed at empowering and educating the youth on matters leadership, governance and entrepreneurship.

The main objective of the summit was to build the capacity of the youth in TaitaTaveta County to remain proactive and aggressive in reaching out for opportunities to better their livelihoods and thus the economy of the county and country at large.This will eventually lead to creating employment and youth coming up with innovative ideas to improve their living standards in line with Vision 2030.

The County Government of Taita Taveta believes in holistic development of the youth. This led to the establishment of the County Biashara Center in collaboration with UNDP.This has created a platform through which the youth are empowered on their roles, participation and involvement in the development of their communities and themselves.

The summit brought together 400 youths from all the wards in the county. The Guest of Honour was Cabinet Minister for Mining Hon. Dan Kazungu

Topics discussed at the summit by speakers:
• Investment Opportunities available for the youth
• Role of ICT in Curbing the high rates of unemployment amongst the youth
• Wealth Creation and Financial Freedom
• A youth entrepreneur spoke about his journey
• A representative from UNDP spoke on how one can move from their comfort zone
Two panel discussions were held namely:
1. Strategies in Tackling Unemployment amongst the youth
2. “Getting it Right”
