The 2018 East African Regional Youth Summit is one of the initiatives aiming at contributing youth inclusiveness, understanding and full participation in the EAC related matters. This is a scaling up effort as similar conferences have been held in Kenya and Uganda [in 2014 and 2015 respectively] under agenda of Climate Change and 400 youth participated. The conference motto was; “we speak to be heard, we act to demonstrate and we start to be followed-EAC let’s go green”.
The main goal of 2018 East African Youth Summit is to offer a platform to the East African youth to engage and enlighten themselves with vast understanding on EAC related matters and enhance their fully participation and therefore tap the opportunities availed by EAC integration process.
The 2018 East African Regional Youth Summit aims at bringing 400 youth across East African countries to Kigali, Rwanda for four days summit in April, 2018. The contribution of this summit is to tackling current global and East Africa region challenges such as SDG’s, migration, unemployment, the rise of violent extremism, youth participation and engagement, innovation and technology, elections to list a few. The following tentative topics are expected to be presented and discussed;
1) The unemployment among the EAC youth and the future ahead
2) Peace and security threats and the role of youth in East African region
3) Technology and innovation-the hopes of the East African youth
4) The young women and the gender equality space across East Africa region
5) The role and contribution of youth in the governance of East African governments
East African Regional Youth Summit theme; “Youth and East Africanzation Bretix lessons for deeper integration”
Whilst the aftershock of the Brexit is still rumbling in Europe, it is important for Youth in the East African Community to reflect critically on the same as they contemplate the future of the EAC. It is meaningful for youth in East Africa to unearth the crucial lessons from the Brexit and be able to contribute to policy discussions inherent in the EAC regional integration processes.
